Music8 benefits guide

For composers

Connect your music with the people who can perform, teach, programme and commission it

Music8 helps composers place their work, ideas and professional activity in front of specialist music communities with a genuine reason to discover them.

Through CHORALLY and MUSIC:ED, composers can already share relevant stories, repertoire, performances, educational work and opportunities. ComposerLink, now in development, will create a more dedicated connection between composers, works, publishers, performers, programmers and commissioning organisations.

01

Build visibility around more than a list of works

A composer's professional identity extends beyond a catalogue. Performances, premieres, appointments, recordings, collaborations, teaching, workshops, commissions and creative ideas all help audiences understand the composer and the contexts in which their music belongs.

Music8 can help connect these elements through relevant editorial and professional content.

  • Composer interviews and profiles
  • New works and publications
  • Premieres and subsequent performances
  • Appointments and residencies
  • Commissions and creative partnerships
  • Recordings and releases
  • Awards and competition results
  • Workshops, talks and masterclasses
  • Teaching and educational resources
  • Calls for scores and composer opportunities
  • Festivals and concert programmes
  • Community and participation projects
  • Best-practice case studies
  • International activity

Discovery is more powerful when audiences can understand the composer, the work and the context in which the music was created or performed.

02

Reach the choral world through CHORALLY

Available today

CHORALLY provides a specialist route to choirs, conductors, choir leaders, singers, festivals, publishers and organisations involved in vocal and choral music.

It can help composers highlight:

  • new choral and vocal works
  • music for particular voicings, levels or occasions
  • premieres and performances
  • recordings and publications
  • composer interviews and creative insights
  • workshops and reading sessions
  • calls for scores and competitions
  • residencies and appointments
  • collaborations with choirs and conductors
  • repertoire supporting education, participation or particular communities

CHORALLY is not intended to reproduce a composer's complete catalogue. It provides editorial and community-facing contexts through which selected works and stories can reach people with a particular interest in choral and vocal music.

Connect educational work through MUSIC:ED

Available today

Many composers also work as educators, workshop leaders, researchers and creators of music for learning. MUSIC:ED provides a route into specialist education communities around the world.

Relevant activity may include:

  • music written for schools or young performers
  • graded and examination repertoire
  • classroom compositions and resources
  • tutor books and teaching publications
  • workshops and composition projects
  • professional development for teachers
  • university and conservatoire appointments
  • composer residencies in education settings
  • inclusive and accessible repertoire
  • community and participation projects
  • research and best-practice case studies
  • international approaches to composition education

MUSIC:ED can help composers show how their work is used in teaching and learning, rather than presenting educational repertoire only as a product or catalogue entry.

04

Help performers and programmers understand your work

A title and instrumentation list rarely communicate everything a performer or programmer needs to know. Editorial content can provide artistic and practical context around selected works.

Music8 content may help explain:

  • the ideas behind a work
  • intended performers or audiences
  • forces, level and performance context
  • connections with particular themes or occasions
  • educational or participation potential
  • cultural background and performance practice
  • the relationship between a work and a wider programme
  • previous performances, recordings or collaborations
  • the composer's broader creative practice
05

Develop a continuing professional presence

Isolated announcements quickly disappear. Connected coverage can build a clearer picture of a composer's work and professional development over time.

Music8 can currently support this through editorial, submitted and managed content across relevant platforms.

Possible connections include:

  • composer profiles where available
  • interviews and features
  • related performances and events
  • publisher and organisation profiles
  • appointments and residencies
  • recordings and releases
  • educational activity
  • commissions and premieres
  • opportunities and calls for scores
In development

Composer accounts and self-managed profiles. Individual Music8 accounts and self-managed composer profiles are not yet available. For now, composer content and profile information are handled through Music8's existing editorial, submission and managed-content processes.

06

Reach new communities and regions

Music8 can help composers introduce relevant work and professional activity to performers, educators and organisations beyond their existing networks.

Possible activity includes:

  • highlighting performances in different countries and regions
  • introducing repertoire to new ensembles and education communities
  • explaining cultural or artistic context
  • sharing translated or regionally adapted resources
  • profiling international collaborations
  • showing how work has been performed or taught elsewhere
  • connecting relevant stories with festivals, venues and institutions
  • highlighting participation in international competitions and programmes
07

Connect with publishers and professional partners

Music8 should complement the work of publishers, agents, managers, ensembles, festivals and PR agencies.

For represented composers, Music8 can provide additional specialist contexts for publisher-led stories, repertoire and educational activity.

For self-published composers, it can provide routes for sharing selected professional information without implying that Music8 acts as a publisher, agent or rights administrator.

Music8 does not replace publishing, representation, rights management or conventional PR. It adds specialist platforms and editorial contexts through which relevant work can be understood and discovered.

09

Promote opportunities as well as completed work

A useful composer presence should look forward as well as document past achievements.

Relevant content may include:

  • calls for scores
  • competitions and awards
  • residencies
  • commissions and commissioning programmes
  • workshops and development programmes
  • festivals and reading sessions
  • grants and funding opportunities
  • appointments and teaching roles
  • collaborations seeking composers
  • composer-led courses and events

Music8 may publish or curate relevant opportunities, but does not currently manage applications or commissioning transactions.

10

Choose the level of support you need

Composers have very different levels of time, experience and professional support. Music8 activity can range from providing information for consideration to developing a more sustained programme of content.

  • Information and submissions

Provide relevant news, event, opportunity or profile information through currently available Music8 channels.

  • Supported content

Work with Music8 to shape information for the audiences and platforms to which it is most relevant.

  • Editorial development

Develop interviews, features, repertoire stories and best-practice case studies with Music8's editorial team.

  • Managed activity

Ask Music8 to coordinate an agreed programme of content and visibility across relevant platforms.

  • Campaign support

Build focused activity around a premiere, publication, recording, residency, anniversary or international priority.

11

Bring your music closer to the people who can give it life

Whether you are established or emerging, published or self-published, Music8 can help place selected work, ideas and professional activity in front of relevant music communities.

You can begin working with Music8 through its existing platforms and editorial routes now. Individual accounts, self-managed profiles and ComposerLink will extend these possibilities as they are developed.
